A Digital Solution to Streamline the Resale of Construction Equipment

By providing construction companies with a digital platform to market their equipment, Machine26 helps them reach a broader pool of buyers, save time, and secure better prices.

Like several other startups, Machine26 is supported by Leonard through its CATALYST program, which enables mature startups to optimize their solutions by deploying them on VINCI Group’s operational sites.

With the increasing focus on decarbonization and circular economy principles, the lifecycle management of construction machinery has become a key aspect of corporate social responsibility.

“Traditionally, when agencies want to sell equipment they no longer need, they rely on small networks of local buyers or turn to auction houses,” explains Nordahl Grenier, Head of Equipment at VINCI Construction Germany. However, between reaching out to buyers, managing paperwork, negotiating, listing equipment on auction sites, and centralizing information, the resale process can be highly time-consuming—despite being a secondary activity for companies.

Machine26, a Berlin-based start-up founded in 2019, aims to simplify the process of trading second-hand construction equipment. Over the past five years, the company has seen growing success across Europe. Its offering is built on two main pillars: a digital trading platform accessible to an international network of buyers and digital solutions for equipment inspections. “Digitalization has enabled us to professionalize the resale of our equipment, saving time, reducing stress, and optimizing financial outcomes,” emphasizes Nordahl Grenier. Since early 2022, Machine26 has served as the reference marketplace for his branches.

The Equipment Manager Remains in Control

How does it work? First, the workshop manager documents the condition of the equipment using a smartphone, with the app guiding them through all stages of the process: taking photos of the equipment, generating a technical report, entering specific information, and uploading regulatory documents (e.g., inspection reports, maintenance records, and quotes). Once the data is uploaded, the user can close the file with a single click. The equipment manager then reviews the file, either approving or rejecting the sale listing before publishing it on the platform.

“One of Machine26’s strengths is that by leveraging a European network of professional buyers, it provides access to a broader buyer base and allows us to diversify the range of equipment we sell. This includes not just machines and trucks but also small equipment, such as compactors, vibratory plates, and jackhammers, which would be difficult to sell individually,” explains Nordahl Grenier. “Over two years, the platform has generated sales exceeding €2 million for us.”

After its initial deployment in Germany, VINCI Construction expanded the use of Machine26 to several European countries, including France and Spain, as well as in Africa. This expanded scope allows for faster, more systematic sales processes while ensuring compliance with organizational directives.
