In search of a reasoned economy of maritime and coastal spaces

Do you know about the Blue Economy? Leonard and Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) are joining forces to launch a series of four public conferences dedicated to certain aspects of the "Sustainable Blue Economy".

Let’s explore together the oceans’ prospects for developing renewable energies, the future of ports, and the resilience of coastal territories.

Thursday 17 March, 5.30-7 pm — Sustainable Blue Economy: investing in the future of the oceans

The role of the oceans in preserving the balance of life on the planet and the climate is better documented than ever, and many States and associations are organizing themselves to protect them better. At the same time, marine environments are whetting new economic appetites between renewable energies and the exploitation of rare resources.

Is a reasoned economic development of the oceans possible? Can the “sustainable blue economy” reconcile economic and ecological interests?

Speakers:

  • Catherine Chabaud, Member of the European Parliament, ex Déléguée à la mer et au littoral, sailor, journalist, member of the CESE
  • Émilie Garcia, Responsable Climat ESG – Direction Innovation at Bpifrance
  • Christian Lim, Managing Director, SWEN Capital Partner
  • Geneviève Pons , Director General and Vice President, Europe Jacques Delors

Thursday 12 May, 5-7.30 pm — Marine renewable energies: harnessing the untapped power of swell and wind

Energy obviously represents a major socio-economic and environmental challenge for the coming decades. The strategic, economic and financial stakes are enormous. Over 70 per cent of our planet is covered with water. Wind, tides and ocean currents make the seas an inexhaustible source of energy. The international race to find the best technologies for exploiting this potential has begun. Which technologies are shaping the future of this new mix of renewable energies?

Our panel of experts will give an overview of the current developments in this specific field and give their own perspectives to help us navigate through the real opportunities and the false good ideas.

  • Robert Cavagnaro, PhD, Mechanical Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (USA)
  • Yuki Esser, Dutch Marine Energy Center
  • Marcus Lehmann, Co-Founder and CEO, Calwave (USA)
  • Irina Lucke, Division Manager, OMEXOM, VINCI Energies (Germany)
  • Rita Sousa, Partner, Faber Ocean / Climate Tech (Portugal)

Startups pitches: Calwave (USA), Ecowave power (Israel), SWAC (France) and Floating Power Plant (Denmark).

Thursday 23 June, 2-3.30 pm — A phantom threat? Coastal areas facing rising sea levels and retreating coastline

In the wake of climate change, rising sea levels are already putting coastal infrastructures to the test. In the face of the threat, technologies and methodologies are evolving: between strengthening defences compatible with biodiversity, adapting to the new situation and retreating to more protected areas, there are many solutions. This round table will provide an opportunity to take stock of these different strategies.
